At Galena Veterinary Hospital, we recognize the importance of Heartgard as a monthly preventative for your pet against roundworms, hookworms, and heartworms.  We recommend year-round administration of Heartgard for your pet, especially now that we are starting to see more cases of infected animals in the Reno/Tahoe area.  If your pet is not already protected with Heartgard, we will need to perform a Heartworm test to make sure that your pet has not already contracted these parasites.  As long as you keep your pet on Heartgard year round, there is no need to perform additional Heartworm tests in this area.  Otherwise, if you go off of the medication for prolonged periods of time, or only administer the medication seasonally then we will need to perform a heartworm test every two years.
